I have a genuine love of instrumental teaching, and am happy to tutor both the complete beginner (unable to read music) through to the more advanced student. Over the years, I have taught from ages 6, through to late 80’s (indeed, many of my students have only taken up an instrument after retiring).

It has been frequently said that I seem to have unending patience, and am inventive in my teaching styles; tailoring methods to suit the individual and their tastes (although I will introduce new styles as tasters as I believe it does us all good to be flexible, and discover new things along the way). You can read more direct from my students below in the reviews section.

I offer lessons on saxophone (any type; alto, tenor, soprano, baritone), clarinet, and flute. However, I do consider myself a saxophone specialist, and hold the DIPABRSM qualification in Saxophone performance. In addition to this, I also hold the DIPABRSM in Clarinet Teaching (with distinction), and also ABRSM grade 8’s in Flute, Soprano Sax, Alto Sax, Clarinet, and Piano. Music theory is incorporated into lessons, and I also encourage students to try (under my guidance) venturing out into arranging, composing, and improvisation (both in a jazz, and non jazz genre), and generally thinking ‘out of the box’ in regards to music learning.

Lessons are taught on a one to one basis, though students are also invited to attend my Wayward Winds Ensemble Group if and when they feel ready (see the Wayward Winds page for more information and reviews).

Reviews from students…..

“I started my clarinet lessons with Keri about two years ago, and can honestly say I look forward to every single lesson. Keri has endless patience and uses different teaching methods of teaching to help you overcome any difficulties. Keri is a great communicator, but above all, you cannot help but get swept along by her enthusiasm. Her continuous encouragement and support enabled me to recently pass my ABRSM Grade 2 Music Theory with a distinction; something I never dreamed possible two years ago”. Tracey D

“Keri is a kind and considerate teacher who brings out the best in me as a student. Each lesson is carefully structured around me, and is aimed at not only improving me as a player, but as a musician as well. I really believe I have improved since taking up saxophone lessons with Keri, and I would highly recommend her”. Andrew F

“Keri is a pain in the neck on rhythm with her ‘bugs’ tool, but this is so important it can be forgiven – just. I find her to be very supportive and critiques are always given with solutions that work for me. Lessons feel relaxed but are actually rather demanding in hindsight”. Chris W

“As an adult learner I really enjoy my lessons with Keri and feel as though I have made great progress with my saxophone. She goes to a lot of trouble to match the lessons to my individual needs and find ways to support and challenge me (just enough!) rather than just working through standard teaching books and exam pieces (although I could also do that if I wanted). Highly recommended!” Rosemary

“Keri has been my teacher for over four years, and in that time I have improved my timing thanks to her many bugs and insects (which include grasshoppers, caterpillars and butterflies, in addition to bananas, guavas, and cheesecake!). She is very encouraging and is continually pushing to improve my technique and musical understanding, and is certainly the best teacher I’ve ever had”. Ian
